William A. Berg is Sigma's founder and president.
From 1982 until 1993, Bill was the research director for Paulson Investment
Company, Inc., creating and building Paulson's research department.
Between 1979 and 1982, he practiced corporate and securities law in Portland
with Stoel Rives. Bill received Master's and Bachelor's degrees (with
honors and distinction) in economics from Stanford University in 1976 and a law
degree from Harvard Law School (cum laude) in 1979. He is a
Chartered Financial Analyst charterholder and a member of the CFA®
Society of Portland since 1986, a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL
PLANNER
TM certificant, and a member of the investment committee
of the Oregon Community Foundation.
John C. Abrahamson, principal and chief investment
officer. Prior to joining Sigma in 1995, Mr. Abrahamson was a portfolio
manager with Qualivest Capital Management, Inc., U.S. Bank's wholly owned
investment adviser, acting as the lead investment officer for U.S. Bank's
Private Asset Management Group, managing over $500 million in private assets and
as co-manager of the bank's Core Equity Strategy. Mr. Abrahamson received
Bachelor's and Master's degrees with honors in music from The Juilliard School
in 1978 and attended Oregon State University. He is a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER
TM certificant and past president of the CFA®
Society of Portland. John recently served on the Leadership Committee for the
Boys & Girls Clubs of Portland's National Report on the State of our
Children & Dyslexia.
Michael J. Freiling joined Sigma
in November 2000 as a portfolio manager. Prior to
joining Sigma, Mike developed software products for the
pension and investment industry. Mike also maintains an
active consulting practice independent from Sigma, advising
large financial institutions and retirement plans. His
quarterly report on the investment markets is distributed to
over 100 of the nation's largest pension and 401(k)
plans. Mike is a Chartered Financial Analyst
charterholder (CFA®) and holds a Ph.D. in applied
mathematics from MIT. In 1977 Mike was named a Henry Luce
Scholar with an appointment to Kyoto University in Japan. Mike
was adjunct faculty member in the Oregon Graduate Institute's
computational finance program, where he taught the portfolio
management course.
Harmon P.W. Laurin, managing director of client
services. From 1998 until joining Sigma in July 2005, Harmon was a senior
vice president for Columbia Management Group in Portland, Oregon, creating and
managing Columbia's Private Wealth Services division with assets under
management of approximately $600 million. From 1993 until 1998 he worked
for Fidelity Investments in San Francisco, California, helping to create
Fidelity's private asset management program and managing the western region
sales division for that program. Prior to that he was the manager of a fee
based financial planning operation that specialized in working with owners of
closely held corporations. He received a Bachelor's degree from Stanford
University in 1980.
Kyle B. Watt, director of client services. Kyle
joined Sigma Investment Management Company in May 2001. Prior to joining
Sigma, Kyle worked in national account sales for Lanier, a document
management company. He is a 1999 graduate of the University of
Oregon, where he received a B.S. in Business Administration. Kyle obtained
his CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER TM certification in 2007.
John E. Bala, director of client
services. From August 2006 until joining Sigma in June 2009,
John worked as senior portfolio manager at Pacific Investment
Advisors, LLC, where he was responsible for managing client
investments and developing new client
relationships. Prior to that, John was a senior vice
president and private client advisor with The Private Bank at
Bank of America. He also served as market president for the
Bank in Southwest Washington. John received a bachelor of arts
degree from Yale University and an M.B.A. in finance and
accounting from the Anderson School of Management at UCLA. He
holds a Chartered Retirement Planning CounselorSM
designation and served on the board of Identity Clark County
(2004 - 2006). He currently serves on the planned giving
committee of the Community Foundation for Southwest Washington
(2004 - present). He is an associate member of the Estate
Planning Council of Southwest Washington.
Timothy J. Wylder, Esq., director of
client services. Prior to joining Sigma in June of 2009, Tim
practiced law and pursued business interests. Tim continues to
maintain a limited law practice in Montana. In recent years,
Tim's law practice has focused on estate planning and trust
litigation, including the successful prosecution of a large
plaintiff's case concerning application of the prudent
investor rule. Tim was in private business from 1984 through
1986, and then began practicing law in Great Falls, Montana.
From 1980 through 1984 he practiced corporate and
transactional law in Portland, Oregon at Stoel Rives.
Tim received an A.B. degree in philosophy from Stanford
University in 1977 and a J.D. degree from the University of
Oregon School of Law in 1980, where he served as Executive
Editor of the Oregon Law Review.
John W. Settle joined Sigma in January 2000 and works with
Sigma on a part-time basis on Sigma's consulting projects. Dr. Settle is
an associate professor in the Portland State University School of Business
Administration, his employer since 1984, where he teaches corporate finance,
investments and portfolio management. Dr. Settle has a B.A.
in Mathematics from Pomona College and a B.S., M.B.A. and Ph.D from the
University of Washington. He is a Chartered Financial Analyst
charterholder and member of the CFA® Society of Portland.
James T. Van Horn, chief operating
officer and chief compliance officer. From December 2001 until joining
Sigma in May 2006, Jim was the controller for City Center Parking, a
Portland-based parking management company. He previously was the chief
financial officer for a hedge fund, a staff accountant with a major national
accounting firm and a nuclear engineer. Jim has been a licensed CPA in the
State of Oregon since 1999. He received his Post-Baccalaureate Certificate
in Accounting from Portland State University in 1997 and his B.S. in Chemical
Engineering from Oregon State University in 1989.
Cheryl L. Donahue has been
with Sigma Investment Management Company since September 1997. Prior
to joining Sigma, Ms. Donahue was a performance analyst with Qualivest
Capital Management, Inc., formerly U.S. Bank's wholly owned investment adviser,
where she was responsible for calculating assets under management, the
returns on mutual fund, commingled fund and separate account assets for U.S.
Bank's Trust Division and responding to RFP's.
Stephanie Garrison, client services
administrative assistant. Stephanie joined Sigma in May 2005
and provides support for marketing and client service
activities.
James A. Monroe, securities
trader. James joined Sigma Investment Management Company in July of
2007. He received his B.S. in Business Finance from Portland State
University in 2007. Prior to joining Sigma, James worked as a volunteer finance
intern with the City of Portland's office of Management and Finance.
